INFORMATION

GMA Network, Inc. is the leading free-to-air media broadcasting company in the Philippines. It is principally engaged in television and radio broadcasting, the production of television programs for domestic and international audiences and other related businesses. The company (then known as Loreto F. de Hemedes, Inc.) started operating its radio station DZBB in 1950 through Robert Stewart, an American correspondent, known to many as “Uncle Bob.” Eleven years later, on October 29, 1961, the company ventured into television and started operating TV Channel 7. In May 28, 1974, the company changed its name to Republic Broadcasting System, Inc.

In the same year, Gilberto M. Duavit, Menardo R. Jimenez and Felipe L. Gozon took over the management of the station. In 1996, the company changed its corporate name to GMA Network, Inc. as it diversified into media-related businesses such as movie making, sets and props construction, film syndication, music and video recording, new media, post production services and marketing.

From the “Where You Belong” tagline, the company came up with a corporate equity in 2002 to bring the network closer to the hearts and minds of its viewers using a new tagline Kapuso ng Bawat Pilipino. The equity defines GMA’s relationship with its viewers as Kapuso (one in heart) that fully understands their needs, dreams, aspirations, and even pains. GMA Network has 46 Very High Frequency (VHF) television stations nationwide that include its flagship station in Mega Manila, originating stations in Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and Dagupan, 3 Ultra High Frequency (UHF) stations and 1 affiliate station. GMA-7 produces and broadcasts radio programs across the Philippines on its wholly-owned operating network of 24 radio stations and one minority-owned radio station. Its anchor radio stations are DZBB on the AM band and DWLS on the FM band.

In 2007, the company reformatted its flagship station DWLS-FM and is now known as “Barangay LS 97.1 Ayos!”GMA-7 reaches out to Filipinos across the globe through its international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. GMA Pinoy TV is currently available in the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Guam, Saipan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the British Indian Ocean Territory of Diego Garcia, 16 countries in the Middle East, 11 countries in North Africa and 49 countries in Europe.

GMA extends the winning strategy of its first international channel by treating Filipinos abroad to a second serving of Filipino programs with another international channel, GMA Life TV. GMA Life TV is available in the United States, Canada, Guam, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, 16 countries in the Middle East, 11 countries in North Africa and in 49 countries in Europe. QTV Channel 11 is women-skewed, with a programming grid primarily designed according to women’s schedules and needs.GMA-7 has played a major role in revolutionizing Philippine television by providing many of the most innovative and trendsetting shows in the country. Its programs boast of the best artists in Philippine entertainment as well as the most respected personalities in the field of news and public affairs.

Aside from bringing the best in news and entertainment, GMA-7 also manifests its social responsibility and commitment to public service through community projects and philanthropic activities that the GMA Kapuso Foundation and Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko Foundation undertake.GMA-7 has gained local and international recognition for its innovative and quality entertainment and responsible news and public affairs programs. For its quality and balanced programming, GMA has received the Best Station awards given by the country’s leading award-giving bodies such as the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) Golden Dove Awards, Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards, Catholic Mass Media Awards, the Rotary Club of Manila and the USTV Students Choice Awards.

It is the first and only network in the country that has won the prestigious George Peabody Award in 2000. Its news program Saksi was awarded the World Gold Medal as Best Newscast in the New York Festivals in 2002, a first for any Philippine news program. It was also the first Philippine broadcasting company to have won the coveted Asian TV Award for Terrestial Channel of the Year in 2005. KFC for World Hunger in Chicken?

Makisig Bayani

KFC and World Hunger

KFC Philippines, as part of Yum! Brands, the world’s largest restaurant company, has dedicated itself to fighting world hunger.
It has embarked on a campaign that aims to raise awareness, raise funds and encourage volunteer efforts by educating customers through in-store posters and TV commercials. To strengthen the campaign, KFC Philippines partnered with the World Food Programme (WFP) in the Philippines, representing the United Nation’s frontline organization fighting hunger, to support children in conflict-affected parts of Mindanao.

Why focus on hunger?

KFC Philippines believes that hunger is a global issue where it can really make a difference. It is a serious problem with serious facts that are hard to ignore. It is the foremost humanitarian problem in the world and is the leading cause of death, even more than war or disease. In fact, every 6 seconds a child dies from hunger somewhere in the world. With more than 59 million children worldwide going to school hungry, KFC Philippines plans to help by starting with meals for at least 10,000 school children affected by conflict in Mindanao.

Who will benefit from the donations?

Proceeds from the KFC Philippines and WFP campaign will go directly to feeding school children in conflict-affected parts of Mindanao. With as little as PhP 5 a day, donors can help feed a child, and help them stay in school, live happily and healthily without having to learn on an empty stomach.

What has KFC done for the program?

KFC Philippines is helping the plight of undernourished children in conflict-affected parts of Mindanao by supporting WFP’s “Fill the Cup” campaign. Launched in 2008, the campaign aims to provide meals to over 20 million school children around the world, and at least 10,000 school-children through “Food for Education” activities in the Philippines.

Apart from that, all KFC stores will have posters and donation cans for the duration of the campaign to raise awareness and to encourage customers to help in the cause.Last year’s campaign which ran from October-December 2007 raised a total of P209,730.15 that provided around 20,000 hot meals to kids. This year, KFC Philippines aims to beat last year’s collection.Through the coordinated effort of KFC customer donations and volunteer work, and with help from WFP, KFC is confident that it can help the fight against hunger.

11 Secret Herbs and Spices

For years, Colonel Harland Sanders carried the secret formula for his Kentucky Fried Chicken in his head and the spice mixture in his car. Today, the recipe is locked away in a safe in Louisville, Kentucky. Only a handful of people know that multi-million dollar recipe, and each is obligated to strict confidentiality by contract. The Colonel developed the formula back in the 1930s when he operated the Sanders Court & Cafe restaurant and motel in Corbin, Kentucky.

There, his blend of 11 herbs and spices first developed a loyal following of customers. "In those days, I hand-mixed the spices like mixing cement on a specially cleaned concrete floor on my back porch in Corbin," the Colonel recalled. "I used a scoop to make a tunnel in the flour and then carefully mixed in the herbs and spices." Today, the recipe is protected by some pretty elaborate security precautions. One company blends a formulation that represents part of the recipe while another spice company blends the remainder. As a final safeguard, a computer processing system is used to standardize the blending of the products to ensure neither company has the complete recipe. "It boggles the mind just to think of all the procedures and precautions the company takes to protect my recipe," the Colonel said, "especially when I think how Claudia and I used to operate. She was my packing girl, my warehouse supervisor, my delivery person-you name it.

Our garage was the warehouse." "After I hit the road selling franchises for my chicken, that left Claudia behind to fill the orders for the seasoned flour mix. She'd fill the day's orders in little paper sacks with cellophane linings and package them for shipment. Then she had to put them on a midnight train." Little did the Colonel and Claudia dream in those days that his Secret Recipe of 11 Herbs & Spices would be famous around the world. Source: KFC USA website

Pressure Fried
The great taste of KFC starts with farm-fresh chicken delivered to the restaurants. Then it is pressure-cooked in batches using the secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices created by Colonel Harland Sanders more than 50 years ago.Colonel Sanders was always experimenting with food at his restaurant in Corbin, Ky., in those early days of the 1930s. He kept adding this and that to the flour for frying chicken and came out with a pretty good-tasting product. But customers still had to wait 30 minutes for it while he fried it up in an iron skillet (considered about 25 minutes too long for the average person to wait).

Most other restaurants serving what they called "Southern" fried chicken fried it in deep fat. That was quicker, but the taste wasn't the same. Then the Colonel went to a demonstration of a "new-fangled gizmo" called a pressure cooker sometime in the late 1930s. During the demonstration, green beans turned out tasty and done just right in only a few minutes.

This set his mind to thinking. He wondered how it might work on chicken. He bought one of the pressure cookers and made a few adjustments. After a lot of experimenting with cooking time, pressure, shortening temperature and level, Eureka! He'd found a way to fry chicken quickly, under pressure, and come out with the best chicken he'd ever tasted.

Today, there are several different kinds of cookers used to make Original Recipe® Chicken. But every one of them fries under pressure, the principle established by this now-famous Kentuckian. The Colonel's first pressure cooker is still around, holding a place of honor at the museum dedicated to Colonel Sanders at KFC's Restaurant Support Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

KFC’s history can be traced back to the man who started it all: Harland David Sanders, or the man popularly known as the face and logo of KFC, “Colonel Sanders.” Sanders was born on September 9, 1890 in Henryville, Indiana and started cooking at a very young age to help out his working mother and family.

Growing up, he took on many jobs—working as a steamboat driver, insurancesalesman, railroad firefighter, farmer and even as an Army private. But it wasn’t until age 40 that Sanders really explored his love for fried chicken.
In 1930, he cooked and served chicken meals for busy families in his small eatery called “Sanders Court and Café” which operated out of his service station living quarters. Eventually, the business boomed, prompting Sanders to expand his restaurant to fit 142 people.

In the next 9 years as chef, he would perfect his fried chicken recipe. In 1935, he was given the honorary title “Kentucky Colonel” by Gov. Ruby Laffoon for his contributions to the state’s cuisine. Since then, Sanders referred to himself as the “Colonel,” and dressed in a “Southern Gentleman” outfit as a means of promoting the restaurant.

In 1939, he switched his cooking method from deep frying to pressure frying, which resulted to extremely faster cooking times. In the following year, Colonel Sanders created his famous “Original Recipe.”Sanders officially went into the chicken franchising business in 1952, when he sold his restaurant after it was by-passed by a major interstate. He traveled the U.S. selling his concept of pressure-cooked chicken for a 5-cent royalty fee for every chicken sold.

By 1955, he established Kentucky Fried Chicken. In the early 1960s, the KFC franchise totaled 600 stores in the U.S. and Canada. In 1964, Sanders sold his share for $2 million to a group of investors, turning KFC into a fast-growing corporation. In 1971 it was acquired by Heublein Inc. and was later sold to R.J. Reynolds Industries. In 1986, KFC was purchased by PepsiCo Inc. and was placed under its restaurant company Tricon Global Restaurants. In 2002, Tricon changed its name to Yum! Brands, now the largest restaurant company in the world with 32,500 stores in more than 100 countries.

Colonel Sanders remained faithful to the restaurant he loved and nurtured for so many years. He traveled 250,000 miles a year to visit KFC stores found all around the world. In 1980, he passed away at the age of 90. Today, his memory lives on through his famously delicious fried chicken enjoyed by millions of people the world over.

KFC and World Hunger

How can you help?Visit the nearest KFC restaurant and donate to help end hunger and save lives.

The Jollibee Phenomenon

Makisig Bayani

Jollibee is a phenomenal success story: what began as a two-branch ice cream parlor in 1975 offering hot meals and sandwiches became incorporated in 1978 with seven outlets to explore the possibilities of a hamburger concept. Thus was born the company that revolutionized fast food in the Philippines.

In 1984, Jollibee hit the P500 million sales mark, landing in the Top 500 Philippine Corporations. In 1987, barely 10 years in the business, Jollibee landed into the country’s Top 100 Corporations. It became the first Philippine fast food chain to break the P1 billion sales mark in 1989. In 1993, Jollibee became the first food service company to be listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange; thus broadening its capitalization and laying the groundwork fo r sustained expansion locally and beyond the Philippines.

As the country's leading fast food chain, Jollibee has grown exponentially on all aspects on operation. From a handful of stores 32 years ago, Jollibee now boasts of more than 600 stores and over 30 international stores.

To achieve its long-term goal to be the country’s food service leader, Jollibee acquired Greenwich Pizza in 1994. A year later, the company obtained the franchise of Delifrance, an international food company. These moves expanded Jollibee’s penetration in the pizza-pasta and French caf-bakery segments. In 2000, the strategic acquisition of Chowking solidified the company’s position as the dominant leader. The move gave it leadership in the Oriental quick-service restaurant segment.
